Whenever landmarks like Mount Fuji and Japanese cuisine are inscribed as World Heritage Sites or Intangible Cultural Heritage, we Japanese perceive it as a matter of pride and a potential source of economic benefits. However, what exactly is the World Heritage system, how did it come about, and what challenges does it face today? This course focuses primarily on Japan's World Heritage Sites, utilizing a wealth of resources and illustrations to explore three key questions: (1) What is the purpose of World Heritage Sites? (2) What can we learn from World Heritage Sites? (3) How can we engage with World Heritage Sites?
